Strange that in my remoteness I seemed to feel, as never before, the vital presence of Earth as of a creature alive but tranced and obscurely yearning to wake – Olaf Stapledon, Star Maker (1937) I miss Slovenia and I’ve only been gone 3 days. It was undoubtedly my favourite country on the list so… Read More Slovenia: Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj
My time in Slovenia been a real rollercoaster. I’ve seen some gorgeous sights, met some great people and faced some interesting challenges; through meeting new people, through bottling up my emotions and through working on a farm producing meat, when I don’t eat meat. It’s been over a month and I’m still struggling with the… Read More Exploring in Slovenia; what I saw from my workaway: Škocjanske jame, Gradišica, Materija and Kozina
I enjoyed writing my first monthly review so I’m doing the same now I’ve been travelling for eight weeks. I’ve now been to six countries; the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia. (Bosnia was realistically just five miles or so on the coast as I got a bus from Dubrovnik to Zagreb –… Read More The two month review: half way through and in Slovenia.
So I’ve arrived at Workaway number 4 and it’s an experience far from anything previous. The first day was 9 hours long and I ended up with the worst sunburn of the trip, the worst headache and consumed an abnormally large amount of white foods. Dinner was eggy bread. It’s since improved but pasta is… Read More Slovenia. Working on a farm is a full time job.
Croatia was an unplanned country on this journey, but one I’m glad to have seen a bit of over the last few days. We visited Dubrovnik which was interesting, but I feel, for my budget and expectations, relatively quickly exhausted. The coast is what really shines here – above the old town and its obsession… Read More Dubrovnik; a short stay in Croatia ft. sun, sea, sand and sweat.
I didn’t ever plan to visit the Costa Brava but of course, plans change and for four days I found myself shaking sand out of my shorts and nursing peculiar sunburns where I’d missed sunscreen. We stayed in a hostel for three nights and whilst we had it mainly to ourselves, we also met weird… Read More A change of plans, sun, sea and sand
Our third workaway has been magical. It began as well as its gone on. We felt comfortable immediately with the owners Helen and Francis and our Netherlands neighbours Tom and Lisa. The sun came in bursts (as to not overwhelm us, of course) and we engaged in new activities such as playing catch and badminton,… Read More Workaway three: Mas Sant Nicolau, Figueres and Friends
Our time in Madrid was brief and beautiful. Bookshops and black coffees. Long days and warm evenings. Conversations we could not navigate well and not dressing appropriately for the weather. Streets filled with balconies, colourful paint and leaves. Skies that seemed like they were painted backdrops for movies. Vegan food. Siesta schedules. Wine.
It’s been a quick month so far with so many new experiences, so I’m taking time to revisit what we’ve done so far. In comparison with those going travelling in the far East or Asia, I thought our cultural experience would pale, but we’ve experienced a lot so far, through new scenarios, but also through… Read More One month in, we are in Spain and it’s time to reflect…
The first time I visited Hamburg, I loved it. I fell for the streets filled with street art, unique shops and the transport system which is great when you’re a solo traveller and want to get about. This time was different. I loved Hamburg, I realise now, because it was my first solo adventure. This… Read More Hamburg: everything differs in the rain.
